Off Season

This off season is beginning to feel a little awkward. Some athletes take a few weeks off, some put their energy towards strength training, and some continue to swim, bike and run. I’m struggling to keep it chill!

Here’s what I’ve been up to:

I did a couple all-out four mile runs to both retain and increase my pace. The idea was to keep the mileage short, but fast and furious. The first two all-out four milers were so tough, leaving me hunched over hyena-breathing with my hands on my knees wondering what the hell I was doing. On the third attempt I got a grip, stayed in control and ran these beautiful splits: 7:43, 7:59, 7:53, 7:51. Patience and persistence works, apparently.

The reason behind this madness is for that silly BQ goal I’m working towards. For my April 2020 attempt it will require a pace of 8:01-8:05. That’s not a lot of wiggle room for race day splits. The idea of running this pace for 26.2 miles seems impossible right now. Like above, patience and persistence will be key for the next marathon build up!

This morning, while out on a seven mile run doubting my ability to run this pace for that long I reflected on my build up and success at the Indianapolis Be Monumental Marathon. It felt easy and attainable because I did not have a specific time goal. The goal was “sub 4” which can mean a lot. Having a very narrow, time specific goal for a marathon really increases the pressure. If there are any suggestions on how to overcome this mental hurdle, please share!

I’m eager to get back into the grit of training!

  1. I too am eager to get back into the grit of training. If only my body would agree with my mind…

You are SO capable of this girl! You should think about doing Jenny Hayes Mastermind Series?! I did this last year and found it super beneficial! I highly recommend it!! If you’re interested, let me know…I’ll hook you up with a discount 🙂 I can also PM you the deets if you’re interested.

  2. I never know when to start my off season or what to do during it. Typically, I just do not do anything during the cold winter months. This time around, I forced myself to register for a January half-marathon and an April full-marathon. Good luck training and reaching your BQ.
